Cayetano still hoping Duterte will run

NO GIVING UP: Senator and vice presidential candidate Alan Peter Cayetano on Wednesday said he is still waiting for Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte to change his mind and run for president next year.

Speaking to ANC's Headstart, Cayetano said he is still waiting for Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte to change his mind and run for president next year.

"I'm waiting till the last minute and we're praying na magbago ang isip ni Mayor Duterte. He is the candidate that will really be a game changer. He's a candidate that, lahat magbabago eh. Parang lahat how do you better the Philippines. Siya, how do you change the Philippines," Cayetano said.

Duterte earlier announced that he will not run for president but will instead retire or seek another term as mayor.

Cayetano said he is not the rumored running mate of Senator Santiago, who has just declared her candidacy for president.

"I think she announced na meron na siya. Sabi niya nagkausap na sila at hindi kami nagkausap," Cayetano said in an interview on ANC's Headstart.

Santiago earlier hinted that she already has a running mate who has already announced his vice presidential bid.

Asked if Santiago was pertaining to Senator Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos, Jr., who is also running for vice president, Cayetano said: "I really don't know but I wish them well."

"Let's see. This is a season for surprises," he added.

When asked why he is so determined to go for Duterte despite the latter's announcement, Cayetano insisted that Duterte is the only choice for him regardless of the mayor's final decision.

"I'm committed to him whether or not he chooses me as his running mate. So until the last minute, we are hoping that we can file together," the aspirant said.

Cayetano also echoed the calls of Duterte supporters to push the mayor into pursuing a presidential bid, adding that the "real change" the country needs lies only in the hands of the tough-talking mayor.

"Mayor, everyone is praying. At sa kanyang pamilya, alam kong it's a hard decision. But, lahat tayo iniisip kung ano ang ipapamana sa mga anak, sa mga apo. And if you really want to change, 'yung tunay na pagbabago, there's only one name there eh, it's a Mayor Duterte," he said.

Cayetano said he is not in a rush to file his certificate of candidacy (COC) and may do it on Thursday or Friday.
