Cayetano: Only Duterte can end "tanim bala"

"Tuloy ang tanim-bala dahil palpak ang gobyerno at may nakikinabang sa gulo. Dito tayo gustong protektahan ni Mayor Duterte."

Vice presidential bet and Senate Majority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano made this remark following another "tanim-bala" incident on Tuesday (April 19) involving two senior citizens who were barred from boarding when personnel at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) discovered live ammunition in their carry-on baggage.

"This is why Mayor Duterte is running. The government has failed to protect the people. Only a leader armed with the political will and courage can stop this disorder. Only Mayor Duterte can dismantle the tanim-bala syndicate operating in our airports," he said.

Cayetano added that his running mate, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, is being villified left and right not only because of his good survey ratings, but also because groups with vested interests are afraid of the radical changes he will introduce if elected.

"Hindi matigil-tigil ng gobyerno ang tanim-bala dahil mayroong mga nakikinabang sa modus na ito. Hindi matanggal si Abaya sa pwesto dahi manhid sila sa daing ng tao. Silang mga nakikinabang sa gulo ang natatakot manalo si Mayor Duterte. Sila ang nambabato ng putik sa ating kandidato," Cayetano asserted.

The senator, meanwhile, remains confident that Duterte will surpass all criticisms hurled against him by his detractors. "From the start, we knew what we were up against. We are fighting a corrupt and rotten system. Mayor Duterte knows he will be mocked and shamed. But we're humbled by the people's continued trust in us. We will not be cowed," he said.

"If this is the path to real change, so be it. Mayor Duterte and I will march forward. To those benefitting from crime and corruption, you have all the reasons to be afraid. Your days are numbered. Change is coming," Cayetano ended.

At the height of the "tanim-bala" issue last year, the tandem took several steps to provide aid to victims of the scam. Cayetano attended the Senate hearings, while Duterte personally went to the Davao International Airport to strictly monitor the area. The tandem also offered legal assistance to the victims.
