Alan and Lani Cayetano: A power couple with a purpose

In an age where marriage is sometimes dismissed as just a formality, Senator Alan Peter Cayetano and Mayor Lani Cayetano prove it can be so much more. For them, marriage is a divine calling — a partnership with God at its center and service to others as its purpose.

The couple tied the knot on March 22, 2004, but their union extends far beyond their personal lives. As individuals, they shine; as a team, they thrive. With distinct strengths and complementary qualities, Senator Alan and Mayor Lani have become a formidable duo in public service.

For the Cayetanos, their loyalty lies first with God. This faith guides their decision-making and their commitment to honor both God and their constituents. “People think marriage is about two people who love each other. Two people who want to journey together, and spend their life together. Tama naman. But ang mas tama, marriage has a divine purpose! In the center of marriage is God,” Senator Alan emphasized. This shared belief strengthens their resolve to love their neighbors and uplift their community.

Their dynamic partnership is visible in their public service. Mayor Lani Cayetano’s transformative leadership in Taguig City has led to remarkable achievements. Under her guidance, the city has been recognized as one of the most improved and business-friendly in the country. Programs addressing the needs of various sectors, from small vendors to persons with disabilities, highlight her administration’s compassionate governance. As she put it, “The Cayetano administration sees you and serves you,” underscoring her inclusive approach.

On a national scale, Senator Alan complements Lani’s local impact by advocating for policies that address systemic challenges, such as reforms to the 4Ps program to combat stunting among children. He has also championed economic and infrastructure policies to benefit underserved communities. Together, their efforts create a seamless connection between local and national governance.

This synergy was most evident during the jurisdictional transition of 10 barangays from Makati to Taguig. Mayor Lani worked closely with national agencies and communities to ensure a proper shift in essential services, especially education and healthcare, while Senator Alan provided support and advocacy on a broader scale. Whenever obstacles to a smooth transition showed up, Senator Alan, a true-blooded Taguigeño himself, did not hesitate to speak up and offer solutions. When EMBO citizens almost lost their rights to vote for a Representative in Congress, he filed a resolution in the Senate urging to distribute the EMBO barangays among the two existing legislative districts. When health centers that were supposed to accommodate EMBO residents were unlawfully shut down, he boldly held the health department chief accountable. When fire stations were illegally padlocked putting the residents in danger, he went straight to the interior and local government department to have it reopened. Senator Alan and Mayor Lani’s partnership not only managed the complexities of the transition but also reassured their constituents of continuity and care.

As Senator Alan reflects, their shared journey is about more than leadership — it’s about a higher purpose. “Every day I pray for a discerning heart. I know I have to seek out and listen to Filipinos from Batanes to Jolo,” he says, affirming his commitment to truly understanding and addressing the needs of the people. For Mayor Lani, the goal is to transform lives through meaningful initiatives that foster economic growth and social equity.

Alan and Lani Cayetano aren’t just a power couple; they are a couple with purpose — dedicated to lifting up the lives of the people they serve. Their story reminds us that true power lies in honoring God, building each other up, and empowering others.
