After more than two decades of marriage, Senator Alan Peter Cayetano and City of Taguig Mayor Lani Cayetano continue to strengthen their relationship through open communication, patience, and trust.
Speaking during the Facebook live session of ‘CIA 365 with Kuya Alan’ on February 17, 2025, the couple shared personal insights on how these three elements have helped them navigate challenges in their relationship.
“We’re still working on communication, but we’ve become more patient and have learned to listen to each other better. Believe it or not, after twenty years [of being married], misunderstandings still happen,” Senator Alan said.
He pointed out that in any relationship, communication goes beyond simply talking. It requires active listening, empathy, and attention that are all essential for growth and mutual understanding.
“One’s spouse or partner will be your best friend, your number one encourager, but also your number one critic,” he said.
Echoing her husband’s sentiments, Mayor Lani emphasized that communication is a skill couples must continuously develop.
“Until now, twenty years later, we still sometimes find ourselves in situations where we have to relearn how to communicate with each other,” she said. “I should read more about relationships. I should read more about love languages.”
Senator Alan concluded by encouraging couples, families, and friends to invest in meaningful conversations, listen with empathy, and be intentional in nurturing their relationships.
“We need to understand God’s kind of love. When we communicate with love, it leads to better relationships,” he said.
