Alan and Pia on joining majority or minority: We just want to get the job done of helping the people

For Senators Alan Peter and Pia Cayetano, it doesn’t matter whether they’re in the majority or minority in the Senate, as long as they get the job done of helping the Filipino people.

“Hindi kami makikipag-agawan sa position. Ang importante ay paano tulungan ang tao,” Senator Alan said at a press conference on July 20, 2022.

“Wala akong motivation makipag-agawan ng magandang committee. Wala rin akong motivation na makipag-agawan kung sino’ng minority leader. I just want to get down to work and where we can be most effective,” he added.

Senator Pia echoed her brother’s sentiments, saying as a senior senator, “I can be effective wherever I can be. I would like to contribute.”

“Whatever I can do I will do because I love my country,” she added.

The siblings had been asked if they had already made a decision on whether to join the majority in the Senate led by Senator Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri or be in the minority with Senators Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III and Risa Hontiveros.

“We’re hoping that in these next few days we’ll have a second round of talk with Migz. I think si Ate (Pia) katext niya si Koko a few weeks ago. So give us a few days. But I can tell you honestly as of this moment wala pa kaming decision,” Senator Alan said.

He also said there is a third option for him and his older sister: “We’re keeping our options open na mag-independent din. So it’s either majority or minority — or mag-independent, meaning neither,” he said.

Senator Alan said both the majority and minority appear to have a balanced approach to their work.

“We don’t want to be with a majority na mag-ye-yes lang sa administration. Nor do we want to be with a minority na everything na gawin ng Presidente, no (ang sagot). The good news is so far sinasabi ng minority they’ll be constructive at sinasabi naman ng majority they will be independent,” he said.

“I don’t mind being in the majority, minority, or independent as long as we can get the job done,” he added.###
