Senate Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano on Tuesday called on Filipinos to unite in prayer for the country, saying national renewal should begin by returning to the principles enshrined in the Preamble of the 1987 Constitution.
He made the call as thousands gathered along EDSA for a lightning rally. Quoting the Constitution, Cayetano said it reflects a commitment shared by all Filipinos regardless of religion.
“We, the sovereign Filipino people, imploring the aid of Almighty God, in order to build a just and humane society… do ordain and promulgate this Constitution,” he said in a Facebook Live on June 30, 2026.
Cayetano stressed that faith should not be excluded from discussions about governance, while clarifying that God should not be claimed by any political group.
“Hindi natin pwedeng tanggalin ang Panginoon sa ating usapan. In fact, we should all be on His side,” he said, adding, “Because without moral foundations, without a moral compass,” society and government would lose their direction.
In a closing prayer to wrap his livestream, Cayetano asked God to raise up principled leaders across every sector of society who would uphold truth and justice.
“Lord, we ask for your forgiveness… We ask, Lord, that as we seek your kingdom and righteousness, you raise up the right leaders. Leaders, Lord, sa bawat pamilya, sa bawat simbahan, sa business community, sa health sector, sa media, leaders sa entertainment, sa ating gobyerno na ipaglalaban po ang katotohanan,” he said.
He also called for unity among Filipinos despite differences in faith, expressing hope for a better future for the nation. “At kung ano pa ang religion ng ating mga kababayan, we join them in the desire for a better Philippines, in the desire for justice.”
The Minority Leader urged Filipinos to match prayer with action by remaining engaged in the country’s affairs while respecting the Constitution and the rule of law.
“Prayers move mountains… Participate in your own way. If what you can do is pray, then pray… If you have WhatsApp or Viber groups, use them to help open our fellow Filipinos’ eyes to what is happening in our country. To those of you in Greater Metro Manila who are able to make your voices heard, please join our protest actions. Let us show our support and make our voices heard,” Cayetano said.
“We are fighting for the same thing… Y’ung Constitution, y’ung batas. Without those rules, including moral rules, wala tayong character. Wala tayong identity as a nation,” he added.
