Amid a series of global and national challenges, Senate Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano on Thursday told students of Cebu Technological University (CTU) that difficult times often shape stronger generations.

Speaking during the CTU student government’s Miting de Avance and Dialogue on April 16, Cayetano said today’s youth face a unique convergence of crises, from the recent pandemic and continuing corruption issues to rising geopolitical tensions.

He said these experiences, while challenging, could serve as preparation for greater responsibilities ahead.

“Usually, the generations that go through crises are [the] stronger generations,” he said.

Cayetano said history has shown how individuals who endure hardship are often the ones called to take on bigger roles later on. He likened this to biblical figures who faced trials before fulfilling their purpose.

The senator also highlighted the importance of perspective, particularly in the face of emerging developments such as artificial intelligence (AI). While some view AI as a threat to jobs, others see it as an opportunity for growth and innovation.

Rather than focusing on fear, he urged students to recognize the potential that comes with change and to position themselves to benefit from it.

“Both of them are looking at the same thing. One of them saw opportunity. The other one saw defeat,” Cayetano said, referring to contrasting views on AI and global developments.

He emphasized that the key lies in how the youth choose to respond – whether to remain uncertain or to take an active role in shaping solutions.

Cayetano encouraged students to participate actively in leadership and decision-making, especially through voting, and to move past political divisions after elections.

“Students, please vote. Pick the leaders that you want and that can lead you into the next chapter,” he said.

“Usually, the generations that go through crises are stronger generations,” wika niya.

“Both of them looking at the same thing. One of them saw opportunity. The other one saw defeat,” wika ni Cayetano.

“Students, please vote. Pick the leaders that you want and that can lead you into the next chapter,” wika niya.
